Artist Statement
Having been a keen artist since early childhood but not having “time” to devote to painting, I found photography an enjoyable way to “capture” the moment and be creative at the same time ……….. little did I realise that from the age of 21, when I received my first modest camera as a family gift, that I would become so dedicated to image making - through the lens, that my whole life would revolve around cameras in one shape or another.
After working in many facets of the industry, I now find myself engulfed in image making on a daily basis as a full time professional photographer.
I shoot only digital, although I still own 35 mm and medium format cameras, and love the creative licence that it gives to me.
I can now take control of my images from the press of the shutter to the final “concept” through the use of computer technology and like all artists take creative control of lighting, modifying and altering the images to suit composition and balance.
Although I am heavily involved in the transportation industry taking conceptual images of trucks, heavy machinery and cars on a daily basis, I have a keen interest in landscapes, still life, nature and people photography, as well as a love of hot air balloon photography.
My favourite people images are using “Rembrandt” lighting with lots of heavy light and shade and landscapes are again using late afternoon and early morning light for mood.
Having been involved in Newspapers equally as long as photography, I have a passion for photojournalism/reportage but unfortunately cannot devote the time necessary to follow this passion through - other than odd submissions to local newspapers and cover shots for Big Rigs Newspaper.
Finally, through my involvement with the Ipswich Photographic Society my skill level has increased from a ”snap shooter” to a skilled “image maker” and through their monthly competitions I have had to “go outside” my comfort zone with certain subjects, thus helping to develop new skills for future use.
